Abstract:
The luxurious L’Atlantique was launched on April 15, 1930 by the Compagnie de Navigation Sud-Atlantique (a subsidiary of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, or French Line) as the twelfth-largest ship afloat, and pride of France’s South Atlantic fleet. The ship, with its Art Deco designed interiors was destroyed by fire in the English Channel in January 1933, with the loss of a score of the more than 200 men of the crew.
